Rebekah Karel,
LMSW, RPT
Child and Adolescent Clinical Director | Therapist
Hi there! I’m Rebekah, a therapist passionate about helping kids, teens, and families navigate ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder), feeding anxiety, and unique eating differences.
Whether you’re a parent worried about your child’s extremely limited diet, or a teen who feels “stuck” around food, you don’t have to face it alone. Even if you’re unsure whether it’s ARFID, we can explore that together and find a path forward that feels doable and safe.
Because ARFID often overlaps with autism, ADHD, and OCD, I tailor my approach to each person’s unique profile and needs. I’m neurodiversity-affirming and identify as having ADHD myself, so I understand the importance of flexibility, creativity, and safety in therapy. Your child is welcome to move around as much as they need to in sessions and I seek to have a sensory-affirming space to meet differing sensory needs.
My work combines evidence-based methods with play and expressive techniques to help clients reduce fear around food and rebuild trust with their bodies. I draw from:
Polyvagal theory and somatic strategies to create a sense of felt safety in the body
CBT and gentle, consensual exposures (bravery challenges) for anxiety reduction
Play therapy and expressive arts (art, games, music, sand tray, and movement) to make therapy engaging and to speak the “language” of the child
As a Registered Play Therapist (RPT), I believe healing happens best through creativity, connection, and play. Because feeding differences impact the whole family, I take a family-centered approach, helping caregivers navigate mealtimes and reduce anxiety at home. I’m also SPACE-trained (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), which equips parents with tools to support their child’s anxiety without power struggles.
For clients who’ve experienced scary choking incidents or vomiting-related fears, I’m completing EMDR training to help clients safely process those experiences and restore a sense of calm and safety.
When needed, I collaborate with medical and feeding specialists, such as dietitians, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and physicians, so families receive comprehensive support for both emotional and physical needs.
I offer in-person and virtual therapy across Michigan, and am able to provide coaching and consultation for caregivers, teens, or adults outside the state. I also welcome clients from all belief backgrounds and can incorporate Christian faith into therapy upon request.
Most importantly, I want you to know this: healing from ARFID and feeding anxiety is possible. With compassion, creativity, and the right support, you or your child can rediscover safety, flexibility, and joy around food.
I’d be honored to walk alongside you and your family on this journey toward healing.
